For JUST $10, This Company Could Get YOU A Hangout With Your Favorite Celebrity
Hanging out with Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Picnicking with ex-American Idol judge Paula Abdul.
Bungee jumping with Will Smith.
These scenarios would only play out in dreams, right? Right??
Thanks to a Los Angeles-based company, Omaze, you can now win absolutely crazy experiences with some of your favorite celebrities while supporting incredible charitable causes.
Founded in September of 2012 by two film producers, Matt Pohlson and Ryan Cummins, Omaze is changing the fundraising game with its genius charitable giving platform.
First And Foremost, Omaze Exists To Facilitate Generous Giving To World-changing Organizations
The company does this by partnering with celebrity influencers who are passionate about certain causes or who want to support a specific charity. Together, Omaze and the celebrity influencers come up with an experience that can be offered as a prize to those who donate money to the charitable cause.
After, Omaze develops compelling promotional material to be used on the platform.
People who donate to a charitable cause are given “entries” into a raffle based on the size of the contribution. The higher the donation, the more entries you get in the raffle. $10 is the minimum amount an individual has to donate to get a significant number of entries in the pool (100). $5,000 gets you 50,000 entries.
It is possible for individuals to submit their names in a raffle without donating any money…but that’s lame. And you have a 0.0000001% chance of winning if you do. So it’s way better for donors and the charitable causes when people contribute.
Winners are selected at random when the fundraising campaign for a particular cause ends.
A few highlight experiences currently being raffled are the chance to join William Shatner in London as his VIP guest for a Star Trek convention and watching the launch of the LightSail 2 spacecraft with Bill Nye.
On the website, I took the opportunity to learn more about one experience that especially stood out to me – the chance to bungee jump with Will Smith in the Grand Canyon on his 50th birthday.
Reminder: this is real.
On the summary page, there is high-level information on the experience that includes the location, date, and a general itinerary. Additionally, there is great content on the charitable cause being supported through the fundraising campaign so that donors know what they are supporting, regardless of whether or not they win the experience.
2nd plug for Will Smith’s campaign: the winner gets to bring one guest with flights and hotels included – an estimated retail value of $2,500.
Outside of the experience raffles, the Omaze site also includes an online store where visitors can buy t-shirts where a portion of the proceeds benefit different charities.
Omaze is a for-profit company that gives 80% of all funds raised to the highlighted charities and keeps the remaining 20%.
To date, the platform has supported over 150 charitable causes and has received donations from individuals in 170 different countries.
From Filmmakers To Founders
Omaze is the creation of Matt Pohlson and Ryan Cummins, two filmmakers who wanted to use their skills to create a tangible impact in the world.
While students at Stanford, the two attended an auction where the chance to hang out with Magic Johnson was on the block. The prize ultimately went for $15,000, far more than the two poor college students could afford.
On the way home, the two came up with the idea for a platform that would democratize access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences while benefiting wonderful charitable causes.
After working for The Clinton Foundation as executive producers, Pohlson and Cummins jumped into Omaze and never looked back. Today, you can find countless incredible stories about what charities have been able to do with funds raised on the platform. And celebrity influencers continue to willingly offer their time to generous donors who would never have access to the types of experiences offered on Omaze.
Once-In-A-Lifetime Experiences Within Reach
Omaze is bringing together multiple groups who, collectively, can make a major, positive impact on the world.
Because of the platform, charities spend less time fundraising, celebrity influencers support the causes they care about, and all donors have the potential to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
This Untold article highlights the power of storytelling and offering once in a lifetime experiences to compel people into action. Pohlson and Cummins are better storytellers than they are businessmen. So they built a great platform upon which they can use their creative skill to generate excitement around charitable giving.
If you are having trouble selling your product or idea, go back to the drawing board and really think about how you can tell your story more effectively. Building an emotional connection with your customers can be just as effective as convincing them of the practical value of what you are offering.
